Are you wondering how you can take better care of your beloved trees this fall season? During fall, tree maintenance is actually very important. Proper fall tree care can help your trees survive the coming winter and thrive next spring. From September through December, trees are actively collecting as many nutrients as possible and storing them away to help minimize the winter stress and foster growth during spring. By performing proper tree maintenance, you are providing your trees with the tools they need to stay healthy.

At Purple Care, our team has extensive experience with tree care. Continue reading to discover some of our most helpful tree care tips.

Rake Away Fallen Leaves

When leaves fall and form a cover around your tree, your tree’s health is at risk. Unattended covers of leaves can result in the growth of diseases, mold, and fungi, all of which can infect your tree. Be sure to regularly rake up the leaves that have fallen around your tree.

Use Mulch

Using mulch around a tree is a great way to insulate the roots and protect the tree against the cold. Mulch is also known to help soil retain moisture and nutrients. We recommend applying mulch in a 2 to 3-foot radius around the base of your tree, leaving the trunk area clear.

Plant New Trees

Without the risk of being scorched in the hot sun, fall is a great time to plant new trees. The cooler fall weather actually stimulates growth and helps your new tree to establish substantial roots. Healthy root growth in the fall is a sure way to ensure plenty of top growth in the spring.

Apply Fertilizer

As mentioned before, your trees can use all the nutrients they can get during fall and winter. In order to promote excellent tree health, it is a great idea to use tree fertilizer. By applying tree fertilizer around the base of your tree, you are helping it to replace nutrients that were lost over summer and store extra nutrients that will give it the strength it needs to survive winter.

Keep Your Trees Hydrated

Fall is often accompanied by cool, dry air, which makes proper tree hydration key. We recommend not relying on sprinklers for watering your trees. Instead, use your hose once or twice a week to deeply water the roots. It is usually best to water early in the morning to avoid evaporation and allow the water to seep into the roots. You’ll want to be sure that the soil around your tree is wet, but not soaking.
