Watch the lawn itself before you book the equipment. A lawn that has greened up and is putting on visible weekly growth is ready. A patchy or winter-sluggish lawn is not, even if the date says “now.”

Days You Should Put the Dethatcher Back in the Shed

Some windows look right on paper and wreck a lawn in practice. Skip dethatching during any of these:

  • Drought stress, even if the grass color holds.
  • Heat waves above 90°F or cold snaps below 40°F.
  • Dormancy (cool-season in summer, warm-season in winter).

Before You Dethatch, Try What the Soil Asks For First

A dethatcher solves a symptom in one pass. Soil work solves the cause over a season. Both have their place, and the order matters.

When to Dethatch Lawn Again: The Frequency Question, Answered Honestly

Most lawns require dethatching every 1 to 3 years. The honest answer is that a soil-supported lawn pushes that closer to every 4 to 5 years, sometimes never.
